The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the lives lost by security personnel in the line of duty would continue to be honoured and remembered.
Disu made the statement on Tuesday in Abuja during a memorial parade held for 17 officers of the Nigerian Police Mobile Force (PMF) who were killed in a terrorist attack at the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Yobe State.
The officers lost their lives in the early hours of May 18 while responding to the attack.
According to the police chief, the fallen officers died defending the country, its citizens, and national peace and security.
He described their actions as the ultimate display of patriotism, courage, and commitment to duty.
Disu noted that the Nigeria Police Force, especially the PMF, has continued to deploy personnel across the North-East in collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
He said officers involved in the operations work under harsh and dangerous conditions daily to ensure the safety of lives and property across the country.
“We want Nigerians to recognise that there are dedicated men and women in uniform who devote themselves every day to protecting the nation and its people, even at great personal risk,” he said.
He added that every fallen officer leaves behind grieving families, interrupted dreams, and a nation indebted to their sacrifice.
“Their memory will continue to live on, and we remain resolute that their deaths will not be meaningless,” Disu stated.
The I-G reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to remain steadfast in its responsibility of safeguarding the nation and supporting ongoing security efforts.
He also expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased officers, assuring them that the Force would continue to stand by them during the difficult period.
The memorial parade, he explained, was organised to honour the slain officers and offer support and condolences to their loved ones.
