First Nigerian Appointed to ICC Development Panel Says Position Demands Greater Commitment

Enesi Habib, the first Nigerian to be selected for the International Cricket Council (ICC) International Development Panel of Umpires, has said the appointment comes with increased responsibility and higher expectations.

Habib shared his excitement during an interview in Abuja, noting that the role also provides him with an opportunity to support and guide upcoming umpires.

He explained that he was initially among 12 African officials shortlisted for consideration before progressing through successive stages that eventually led to his promotion from the regional level.

According to him, reaching the final selection phase was already a rewarding experience, especially given the level of competition from experienced officials across the continent.

He said the selection process involved multiple stages, including interviews, before he eventually received confirmation of his appointment via email from the ICC.

Habib added that the news brought him immense joy and gratitude, describing it as a significant milestone in his career.

He noted that the new position would demand greater commitment, as officials on the Development Panel are prioritised for assignments in ICC tournaments ahead of regional umpires.

He further explained that the role could require him to officiate matches outside Africa, including high-intensity competitions that demand thorough preparation and professionalism.

Despite the increased workload, Habib said he remains grateful for the opportunity and committed to mentoring younger umpires while representing Nigeria positively on the global stage.

The Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) also welcomed his achievement, describing it as a major breakthrough for the development of cricket in the country.

NCF President Uyi Akpata said the milestone reflects years of dedication, discipline, and consistency in performance.

He added that the achievement sets a new benchmark for Nigerian officials and should inspire others to pursue excellence in the sport.

Habib, a former cricketer, made his ICC umpiring debut in 2018 during the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup Africa Division 2 Qualifiers held in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

Since then, he has officiated in several ICC events, invitational tournaments, and franchise competitions across Africa, accumulating more than 60 T20 International appearances.

The ICC International Development Panel of Umpires is made up of highly rated officials from different parts of the world who are groomed for possible elevation to the ICC Elite Panel.
