The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Lagos Branch, together with the Human Rights Committee, has called for closer cooperation between legal practitioners and the police to enhance justice delivery and uphold the rule of law.
The appeal was made during a courtesy visit to Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Simeon Akpanudom, at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos, on Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by FCID spokesperson, ASP Aminat Mayegun, and made available to journalists, the visit was aimed at strengthening institutional engagement between both sides in the interest of justice and public accountability.
The delegation, which included members of the NBA Lagos Human Rights Committee and its sub-committees, said the interaction was designed to deepen collaboration between lawyers and the police and promote mutual understanding in the justice system.
They proposed the establishment of a structured communication channel with the FCID Annex to encourage regular dialogue on issues affecting legal practice, policing and citizens’ rights.
Key discussions focused on training opportunities for police officers, improved engagement on justice-related matters, protection of suspects’ rights, and strengthening investigative, judicial and forensic processes.
The group also considered frameworks for coordinated detention and custody visits in line with police guidelines, referral systems for addressing human rights concerns, and joint public enlightenment campaigns.
In response, Akpanudom commended the Lagos NBA for its commitment to justice delivery, respect for the rule of law and protection of human rights.
He stressed that continuous collaboration between the police and justice stakeholders remains vital for accountability and building public confidence in the justice system.
The AIG reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force under Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu to people-oriented policing.
He added that ongoing training and capacity development for both police officers and legal practitioners are essential for strengthening compliance with human rights standards.
Both parties agreed on the need for sustained engagement to enhance institutional cooperation in the shared goal of promoting peace, security and justice in society.
