Defence Minister Reiterates Nigeria’s Commitment to Strengthening Regional Security Cooperation

Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to strengthening regional security collaboration aimed at tackling terrorism and stabilising the Lake Chad Basin.

This was disclosed in a statement issued in Abuja by the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence, Enderline Chukwu.

The Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, made the remarks during an official visit to N’Djamena, N’Djamena, where he attended a meeting of defence ministers from countries contributing troops to the Multinational Joint Task Force under the Lake Chad Basin Commission framework.

He stressed the importance of continued cooperation among member states in dismantling terrorist groups and addressing cross-border security threats in the region.

Musa also commended the government of Chad for hosting the meeting and acknowledged its leadership role within the joint security arrangement. Appreciation was similarly expressed to the President of Chad and Chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Commission Summit for supporting regional peace initiatives.

The gathering brought together defence officials from Nigeria, Cameroon, Benin, and Chad, along with senior military commanders and intelligence representatives, to assess ongoing operations and improve coordination.

Participants reviewed operational reports from defence chiefs and intelligence heads on the effectiveness of the Multinational Joint Task Force and discussed evolving security challenges in the Lake Chad Basin.

Key issues considered during closed-door sessions included troop deployment, funding limitations, and changing patterns of terrorist activity in the region.

The engagement ended with renewed commitments by member states to deepen cooperation and enhance collective security efforts across the sub-region.
