Court Ends Marriage After Husband’s Six-Year Disappearance

An Upper Area Court sitting in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, has brought an end to the marriage between Aisha Salisu and Abubakar Isah after finding that the husband had abandoned his marital duties for about six years and failed to show affection toward his wife.

Salisu had petitioned the court, asking for the dissolution of the marriage on the basis of neglect, absence of care, and prolonged disappearance of her husband. She explained that the union was contracted under Islamic marriage rites and that both of them lived in Anguwan Hashimu, Mararaba, within the court’s jurisdiction.

She further told the court that her husband did not meet his responsibilities as a spouse, stating that he failed to provide for her needs, including healthcare, food, and clothing.

In her request, she urged the court to formally dissolve the marriage, citing abandonment and lack of emotional and financial support spanning six years.

Isah, who did not dispute the claims, informed the court that he left home in search of better income opportunities. He then agreed to his wife’s request and verbally ended the marriage in line with Islamic practice.

Presiding Judge Adamu Haruna ruled in favour of Salisu and declared the marriage dissolved, allowing both parties to go their separate ways.

The court further instructed that Salisu must observe the prescribed three-month waiting period before entering into another marriage, as required under Islamic law.
