Health authorities in Kano State have rolled out a series of activities to commemorate the 2026 Africa Vaccination Week, with a renewed focus on increasing vaccine uptake and strengthening integrated healthcare delivery across the state.
At a media briefing held at the Kano Emergency Operations Centre, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, said the initiative highlights the government’s determination to safeguard children and families through immunisation and other essential health services.
He noted that this year’s theme, “For every generation, vaccines work,” draws attention to the lasting impact of vaccines and the importance of reaching children who have not received any form of immunisation.
Labaran explained that the state is implementing a broad range of interventions alongside vaccination, including deworming, family planning, antenatal services, nutrition checks, HIV counselling, malaria treatment, diarrhoea care, and breastfeeding support.
He added that the campaign would be officially flagged off with a rally and health walk involving community leaders, religious figures, and polio survivors to boost awareness and participation.
The commissioner also revealed that a digital data tracking system, supported by international health partners, would be used across all local government areas to monitor vaccination coverage and service delivery in real time.
He acknowledged the contributions of global partners such as the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and GAVI, while also praising the state government for providing funding and policy support for the programme.
Labaran urged local government officials, primary healthcare workers, and data managers to ensure effective mobilisation, proper documentation, and safe implementation of all activities.
He further appealed to media organisations to help spread awareness and encourage parents and caregivers to take advantage of the services.
He emphasised that the goals of the campaign include higher immunisation rates, efficient service integration, accurate data reporting, and sustained public engagement across the state.
