Guards Brigade Explains Details Behind Corps Member’s Death in Abuja

The Nigerian Army’s Guards Brigade has provided details on the tragic death of a National Youth Service Corps member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, during a robbery incident in the Dei-Dei area of Abuja.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the Guards Brigade, Lt. Olawuyi Odunola, explained that the corps member was accidentally caught in the crossfire during a gun battle between soldiers and suspected robbers.

According to her, troops from the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group were conducting a routine patrol in the early hours of April 25 when they received a distress alert from Shagari Estate over an ongoing robbery attack.

She noted that upon arrival, the soldiers encountered armed suspects who opened fire while attempting to flee, leading to a brief but intense exchange of gunfire.

During the operation, Jamiu was struck in the crossfire and later died from his injuries despite efforts to save him.

Odunola described the development as unfortunate, explaining that the troops were operating under tense and rapidly changing conditions while trying to protect residents and secure the area.

She added that the brigade’s commander, alongside officers and personnel, has extended condolences to the victim’s family, the NYSC community, and others affected by the incident.

The spokesperson further disclosed that a comprehensive investigation has been launched to establish the exact sequence of events, with assurances that the outcome will be made known.

She also confirmed that the deceased’s remains have been transferred to the appropriate authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.

Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory, the brigade said it would reassess its operational procedures to strengthen civilian protection.

Residents were encouraged to remain calm and continue supporting security agencies in efforts to maintain peace and stability.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about security in parts of the capital, drawing attention to the need for sustained efforts to address criminal activity in the area.
