Akure, April 24, 2026 — A former Chairman of the Ondo State Football Agency, Dapo Ajibade, has said football governance should prioritise long-term development rather than focusing solely on match outcomes.
Ajibade, who previously headed the agency in 2017, made the remarks on Friday in Akure after an inspection visit to its facilities.
The agency oversees Sunshine Stars, Sunshine Queens, and the Under-19 team in Ondo State.
He explained that its responsibilities go beyond competitive football, stressing the importance of grassroots development, infrastructure improvement, and building a sustainable framework for the sport.
According to him, real progress in football administration depends on developing strong systems rather than concentrating only on short-term victories. He also urged stakeholders to support leadership efforts in order to achieve meaningful growth in the game.
Ajibade commended the agency’s youth development programmes, especially the Under-19 team, which he described as one of the strongest in the country, and also acknowledged the progress of Sunshine Queens.
He appealed to football stakeholders in the state to provide constructive support for the current management, noting that collaboration is essential for advancement. He added that constant criticism without backing could slow down development.
The former chairman also pointed to ongoing upgrades at the agency’s hostel facilities, describing them as a positive milestone that past administrations had not achieved.
He expressed optimism that Sunshine Stars could secure promotion back to the Nigeria Premier Football League next season if current efforts are sustained.
In response, the Chairman of the agency, Divine Ogbonnaya, appreciated Ajibade’s visit and encouragement, reaffirming his commitment to strengthening football development in the state.
He said the administration would continue to pursue programmes aimed at improving the sport while calling for consistent support from stakeholders. Ogbonnaya also expressed confidence that Sunshine Stars would return to the top tier of Nigerian football.
