Rivers Police Scrap Tactical Teams, Unveil New Crime Unit

Authorities in Rivers State have restructured policing operations by disbanding existing tactical teams and introducing a new unit aimed at tackling violent crimes more effectively.

The development was disclosed by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, during a briefing with journalists in Port Harcourt. She explained that the move followed a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

According to her, officers from the scrapped tactical teams have been integrated into a newly established formation known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU). She noted that the unit is designed to respond promptly to incidents of violent crime while operating within established rules and respecting human rights.

Agabe stated that the reorganisation is intended to enhance coordination within the force and improve public trust in policing.

She also conveyed a warning from the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, who cautioned officers against misconduct such as extortion and abuse of authority, stressing that violations of the police code would not be tolerated.

Adepoju further assured residents of the command’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property, while encouraging citizens to support law enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activities and unprofessional behaviour.

The overhaul reflects a renewed push toward more accountable, efficient, and community-focused policing in the state.
